I have not seen any firmware hacks that can render any recent SuperDrive as region free, and since such hack is illegal in some countries we couldn't discuss it here even if one existed. If you want a region-free drive, you'll have to look for an external drive that is or can be made region free.

Jan 7, PM in response to varjak paw In response to varjak paw Thanks for the reply, I work for a film studio in the UK and as I view films from all over the world for potential release in the UK its important that I'm able to view said films on the go on my laptop. Bypassing a region code certainly isn't illegal in the UK, its down to individual DVD distributors to region code thier product not hardware manufacturers.
I've read elsewhere that VLC will bypass the region card when a disc is started in it, can anyone confirm this? Message was edited by: drunkenmonkeykev. I've been doing some research and region locking is apparently illegal, or at least seen as an extremely dubious and anti competitive practice in many countries. Message was edited by: Host. Perhaps this isn't the ideal solution, but you could simply purchase an external DVD drive and set the region. There are some external bus-powered versions out there that are fairly small. Of course you'll need several if you want to have access to all regions without changing the codes. However, the DVD drives on most new Macs have region lockout on the hardware level, so VLC will not necessarily be able to play discs from multiple regions.
If you play a lot of DVDs from different regions your best option is to buy a USB or Firewire external drive that you can set to the region you require. I think this is totally unacceptable and something for which Apple should reimburse users the price of having replacement Region 1 or which ever region you happen to reside in drives installed or replace them for free.

It was working until high Sierra update. I have only one Mac left that could update to High Sierra and has a built-in optical drive.
This was a lifesaver for many of us up through Sierra—thanks! Apple has apparently done something else to the OS to disable these drives.
